“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get.” Matthew 6:16 NLT
Ever since I was little, I remember my parents fasting. Fasting is to abstain from all or some kinds of food or drink, especially as a religious observance. I remember going to prayer meetings and knowing that my parents were praying after they had not eaten all day, I really did not grasp the full concept of why fasting and prayer go together. As I got older, I started to fast also but I realized that I was not doing it correctly. Do you know that it took me years and years to figure that out!! When my church use to fast, I would cut certain things out and I would unknowingly deprive my body of the nutrients that it needed. I would buy a list of “fast friendly” items to replace the junk food in my home and I would check it off my list when it was over as an accomplishment. This is not the point fasting. God wants more time with us.
Fasting without prayer is starvation!!!
There is more for us when we are able to strengthen our spirits and hear Gods direction more clearly. I’ve heard the term mind over matter before and I looked it up. The definition of it is used to describe a situation in which someone is able to control a physical condition, problem, etc. by using the mind. It’s the ability to keep going even when they are tired and shows that the mind is more powerful. Our spirits are stronger than our flesh when we lean on the Lords strength and not our own.
Have you completed a fast before?
What can you fast and pray for today?
