You Got The Power

What do you think of when you think of mentoring and empowering?  What influence do you have on others? What can you teach others? What are your gifts?  Why am I asking so many questions?  LOL!!!  But really think about these.

Your parent, sibling, favorite teacher, neighbor, youth leader, coach, co-worker, aunt, a trusted friend are all people that you can learn from. Now it’s your turn. Who can you help? Every day is an assignment in which you have a choice to complete what is presented. The tasks provided and people that you encounter are all part of your assignment for your good.  Whether it is to learn from or teach others, it’s all part of the plan that God has for your life. One of my favorite verses from the bible is found in Matthew 5:16 (KJV) – Let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.  YES!!!!! God wants each of us to use the gifts that he has given us with excellence and to also help others with our gifts. Only YOU can show your gifts, in the way that YOU execute it.  Someone is always watching and learning from what we say and through our actions. We are important!!! It is important to empower others and help them to see things from a different perspective.

A mentor is defined as an experienced or trusted advisor, a trusted counselor or guide, a wise and trusted counselor or teacher. I have had the honor to serve as a leader for mentoring and empowering group for the last 3 years and it has been my desire to help lead others to their purpose, by realizing their passion/gifts and potential. I always tell my group that I want them to “grow and go “as I want all of them to learn everything needed and then go and teach others. Learning from past experience and setting monthly goals help people reach their potential and then they are able to mentor others.

I love to encourage. I have found that empowering others shows that you have a high belief in them and their abilities. If you believe in them then they will believe in themselves. Another one of my favorite verses is from Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. My group will hear me shout this verse and the translation of “Come out of your comfort zone, take action, God has something greater for you!”

It is important to live the way that you mentor.

Empower is defined as giving someone authority or making someone stronger/ more confident in their life. It does not hurt anyone to empower them. I have found that enlarging others makes you larger, as you gain satisfaction that cannot be brought. Letting people know that they can do it and giving them an opportunity to show their talents is a way to encourage.  While reading one of John Maxwell’s leadership books, “21 laws of leadership” it reveals the Law of the Picture which is basically that people do what they see.  It is important to live the way that you mentor. We have all heard that actions speak louder than words, right; so it is important to always be aware that as a mentor, that you are always an influence, whether you are trying to or not.

For example, when I am asked, what does it mean to be a Christian/ Follower of Christ? I reply with: Knowing who God says I am. My Identity throughout my life is not just on Sundays as I am a:

  • Servant leader
  • Worshipper
  • Sister
  • Daughter
  • Aunt
  • Thinker
  • Writer
  • Friend
  • Manager
  • (Future) Wife
  • (Future) Mother

and so much more

I am not limited. Always know that YOU are not limited and have support from others. Anything you hear contrary to that is a lie that you do not have to accept. TIME FOR ACTION!!!!

  1. Be a voice, not an echo.
  2. Lead by example
  3. Hold fast to your identity
